{OOC} History
Pre-Asphodel
Marik Ishtar was born in a hole in the ground. And then it got worse.
His life followed the events in the link above until he'd reached 13 years old - with rudimentary mastery of the Millennium Rod securing him a handful of loyal thugs, Marik formed a criminal unit he christened the "Ghouls" and attempted his first major heist. Someone, however, tripped an alarm, and Marik fled with his spoils - only to dash through a door and find himself somewhere completely different.
This nexus, a multidimensional hotel called the "Dressing Room", pulled in variations of people from Marik's and similar worlds. During his stay, Marik met several versions of himself, as well as key individuals from his own future. Most importantly, he met a Spirit of the Ring that the Dressing Room had nicknamed "Iris" - which pointed out to Marik (here "Brunch") the foolishness of attempting to defeat someone called the "King of Games" by, well, playing games with him. Marik took this lesson to heart.
He also tired of being belittled. Both younger and, as a result of his own ignorance, more arrogant than most other Marik/Malik Ishtars in the Dressing Room, he found himself humiliated at every turn. He also grew annoyed with the "events" in the place, which to him focused solely on making him miserable. His frustration peaked during a period in which he and an older double resorted to physical violence as vampires. Marik blacked out, his dark half taking over - he escaped with a series of bite marks on one arm and a thoroughly frustrated sense of self-worth. Shortly afterward, he had a brief but pleasant (and event-induced) encounter with a girl named Akino Seiran; bewitched by the Dressing Room into falling in crush with him, she and Brunch shared his first kiss. He returned to his homeworld shortly thereafter.
Marik emerged from his time in the Dressing Room having drawn two major conclusions: one, he had to find the Pharaoh (whose location he now knew, also thanks to Iris) before its vessel completed the Millennium Puzzle; and two, he had to kill his own emotions and smother his own pride before it completely proved his undoing. He succeeded admirably in both these goals, and within three years had scattered the melted remains of the Millennium Puzzle before the slab in which it was supposed to have been laid to rest. Only obtaining the God Cards remained - and then, he figured, it would be safe to feel emotions again.
The Ring Spirit of his own world, however, wasn't pleased someone had interrupted its plans. Tracking Marik down to exact revenge, it began killing his Ghouls one by one; Marik, anticipating this new enemy, set a trap for it in return. They stalemated - Marik wrested the Ring off of its host, rendering it powerless, yet was propelled backwards towards apparently certain death (he figured he'd break his spine from the impact).
He landed again, however, back in the Dressing Room, and quickly struck up an acquaintance with Seiran, Iris, and a younger version of himself who had never left. Though he occasionally tried (unsuccessfully) to mentor his younger self, feeling dissatisfied with his own methods back home, "Linner" mostly drifted, living each day in anticipation of his impending death. The Dressing Room encouraged him to become intimate with Seiran; he yielded, and they struck up a romantic relationship.
Seiran, too, both left and returned; they picked up where they'd left off again, but both had secrets to reveal to the other. Linner eventually confessed to being "Brunch", while Seiran had to admit she was the reincarnation of the Pharaoh's vessel, Yuugi. Despite the irony, they both promised to try and make the relationship work - against all odds, Linner'd actually managed to grow fond of her.
Eventually, however, he returned to his world - and didn't die like he'd thought he would. Amused yet rueful, Linner melted yet another Millennium Item, and continued pursuing the God Cards (mostly just to have something to do). He figured his days were numbered anyway, and he figured correctly.
Shortly after obtaining his final God Card, the Winged Dragon of Ra, Marik was accosted by yet another immortal Millennium Item wielder - this time the judge, Shaadi, who came to hold him accountable for the destruction of the Puzzle and the Ring. Marik chose instead to cast judgment upon himself, attempting to summon Ra but being rejected by the card instead. He burned alive with Shaadi watching, and turned to him (having recognized him as the man who'd appeared the day his father died).
Just for the record, he asked, who killed his father?
Shaadi just stared. Linner died laughing.
Asphodel Life
"Bennu Tammuz"'s life hasn't been nearly so interesting, however. A drifter and a dropout, he wanders around town on his motorcycle, doing odd jobs and crashing in a small, empty flat to sleep. He's particularly drawn to the edges of town and often strikes up conversations with people as they're about to attempt to leave - in effect serving (albeit unknowingly) as an NPC who helps prevent players from leaving the "game". If you ask him why he gives so few damns about anything, where he came from, or whether he has any immediate family, he'll shrug and wonder why you care. As he awakens, he may realize how little he actually knows about himself. Whether he acts on this is another matter.
He does, however, have one connection to the people in Asphodel: a young nephew, Faruq Banoub, in the hospital's mental ward. Bennu visits him when he can, usually bringing him something from the outside world (though he hasn't pondered why he thinks a boy cooped up by himself would like these tidbits), and puts up with his nephew's unpredictable behavior. Nothing ruffles him. Nothing bothers him.
But hey, the girl who runs the clock shop's kinda cute. Might be good for idle smalltalk sometime.
